New housing in Parson Cross

Nearly 11 hectares (25 acres) of land will be made available in Parson Cross over the next couple of years. Much of this land is owned by the council and is land that has been cleared by demolishing old council houses. All this land will be sold for redevelopment, but some of the sites could be utilised for new green space, play areas, and for community buildings.

The new houses will be built for sale. It is still uncertain if any of the new houses will be rental properties. The Parson Cross Forum is working with a number of organisations that may be willing to build specialist properties for elderly and disabled people.

The Forum has commissioned major research into the hopes and aspirations of local people, the results of which are being used to ensure that any major changes will benefit local residents well into the future. From new houses, to sports and leisure facilities, improved schools to new and refurbished community buildings. Real jobs for local people and access to high quality education and training.

Rob West and Michelle Leroux from Roger Evans Associates and Mary Parsons From Hall and Partners have been employed to test all the ideas that have come from local people, such as new houses, improved schools and refurbished community buildings, and to draw up a master plan showing how local ideas about redevelopment fit into the wider framework for north Sheffield.

College Land

Sheffield College is closing its main Parson Cross Campus and moving to a new purpose-built college in Hillsborough. This means that all of the college buildings on Remington Road and Morrall Road will be demolished and the land sold to private developers for housing.

The College has been working with Parson Cross Development Forum, and has agreed an outline planning application that will lead to the building of up to 400 new homes, two special schools, a new learning centre, and a combined sports and youth centre. The whole scheme has been designed by Chapman Robinson Architects with the help of many local residents.

The planning application has been submitted to Sheffield City Council Planning Department and a decision should be made before Christmas. Local people have also been supported by Parson Cross Forum and Stephanie Fisher from CABE in ensuring that any development will lead to high quality design, meet local needs and fits into the existing landscape on this prestigious site.

Chaucer School

Sheffield City Council has decided to support the development of a 4,500 sq meter supermarket on the Halifax road end of Chaucer School. This decision has been made following a study of retail demand in north Sheffield. The study was carried out by a firm of consultants and the report was delivered to a select audience of local politicians, council officers and community representatives. The Council believes that a supermarket is needed to prevent the “leakage” of local money into other areas, such as Hillsborough and Ecclesfield. It could also mean new jobs, and less travel in cars and busses.

Alternative sites at Penistone Road (opposite the Sheffield Wednesday Ground) and Kilner Way at Wadsley Bridge were rejected on grounds of accessibility and impact on local economics.

The report is still confidential, as it also contains references to a second study on the financial viability of local regeneration plans, particularly around the councils current stock reduction targets and community ideas for new buildings.
